Per area lifeguard protocols, the annual event at Seacliff State Beach was cut short Thu when 2 4- to 8-foot sharks were sighted at about 1:20 in the afternoon about a half mile up the coast from the competition, Santa Cruz Lifeguard Program Coordinator Paul Steinberg wrote in an email to parents.
